This lovely tunic has a flattering A-line shape with 3/4 length sleeves. On the front you'll find a rounded pocket near the sidehem for practicality sake. This garment is very distinctive, made by hand from indigo tie-dyed cotton in the rural areas of Yunnan, South-West China.
The pattern on the fabric is handmade, by an intensive process of knotting, stitching and tieing to resist the infiltration of the indigo dye. After immersing in a traditional wooden dying vat and drying, all the knots are opened up, the threads removed and the fabric washed and ironed.
Indigo is one of the oldest dyes known to mankind and well-loved throughout the centuries for its subtle colouring magic. The tie-dye adds to the shades of blues visible.
Over a very long time the indigo will fade, but not lose its character.
Our tailors have made this very special fabric into an outstandingly gorgeous tunic which will last for years. From our own label 'Hempcat'.
Indigo tie-dye long sleeved tunic in cotton
Unlike chemical dyes, indigo doesn’t bond with the fabric but adheres in miniscule particles to the weave. The dye is water soluble and therefore it will be impossible to make this fabric 100% colourfast.
However, if you follow these instructions you will be able to wear and enjoy the garment without any visible sign of dye rubbing off afterwards, while retaining the contrast of the tie-dye. Also, no shrinkage will occur as the fabric has been washed already.
WASHING TO GET RID OF THE EXCESS INDIGO:
- Soak in lukewarm water overnight with 7 parts water and 1 part vinegar. The acidity of the vinegar fixes the dye, so during this soak no dye will be lost. The weave will merely loosen up and allow easier rinsing out of the less well fixated indigo particles.
- Wash with a gentle detergent by hand for a short time in lukewarm water. At this point the water will turn blue. No need to worry!
- Rinse at least 10 times to get rid of the excess indigo. The water will slowly turn less blue.
- Hang to drip-dry
- Iron on cotton setting, using steam if you wish is fine.
Your garment is now ready to be enjoyed without the dye coming off.
For future regular washes we recommend to wash separately by hand or machine with other dark colours on a normal cotton setting.
